Working
with Your Doctor
Teamwork between you and your doctor is important
for good health care. You should feel comfortable telling your doctor
your concerns. You should be able to ask questions when you need to,
and to understand the answers. To work better with your doctor, follow
these tips:
Plan ahead for appointments. Write out your concerns and questions.
Keep your explanations short. Give the facts. Don't tell a
long story or include details that aren't helpful.
If you have a concern, speak up. Be specific. For instance,
say: "I'd like to take fewer pills a day. Is that possible?"
Have your doctor write down his or her instructions. If you
don't understand something, ask questions until you do.
Be honest with your doctor about what you do and don't do.
It's your health that's on the line.

Appointments

Appointments can be time-consuming. These suggestions may help:
You may be able to do blood pressure checks yourself at home.
Ask your doctor whether this is an option for you.
Before you go in for your appointment, call the doctor's office.
Ask if appointments are running on time.
If seeing the doctor during the day is hard for you, ask about
evening or weekend hours.
Be on time. If you're late, you may have to reschedule.
